Our Bookstall

The church has had a bookstall for over 50 years. We believe it is important that regular worshippers and visitors can have the opportunity to browse and purchase books and other materials including:
• Books about the Christian faith and our churches
• Devotional materials to aid personal prayer and reflection
• Inspirational stories from Christians and people of faith
• Works that will help us to understand a Christian perspective on some of the important issues facing the world

The bookstall has been ably managed since its inception by Mr Charles Taplin and we are very excited to be taking over this important part of the church’s ministry.

If you have any ideas or suggestions, or the books shown below are no longer stocked on the stall, and you’d like a copy, please contact us on pickeringchurchbooks@gmail.com

Watch this space for news about new stock and events.

When we live with unresolved anger or hurt, the result is nearly always bitterness, broken relationships, and unhealthy behaviors. Unforgiveness not only sabotages our interactions with those around us, it impedes our own spiritual growth and inner peace. And it can happen to anyone. In her most vulnerable writing yet, Ruth Graham reveals how a visit to Angola Prison inspired her to release the unforgiveness lurking in her own heart--toward others, herself, and even her heavenly Father and her earthly father, evangelist Billy Graham. In this encouraging book, she weaves her own personal experiences with biblical examples to explore what holds us back from forgiving others and ourselves--and what we gain when we finally discover the power to forgive. Along the way, she guides us into our own deeply personal experiences of forgiveness that will penetrate our protective walls and unleash true transformation in our lives.

Jeff interweaves the story of his early years, becoming a Christian and being called to ministry with the biblical account of Jesus meeting with the disciples on the beach at Galilee after His resurrection.
In his unique insightful way, Jeff reflects on elements of that encounter that readers might not have considered before, such as why didn't Jesus help out the fishermen earlier, what was the significance of catching 153 fish and how having breakfast together was beneficial for the body and soul.
Themes:
* How to keep on believing when we cannot see clearly.
* Why some Christians still struggle with shame when the Bible tells us of the good news of forgiveness.
* The importance of comforting others without resorting to unhelpful clichés.
* Recognising that the Christian life might not always be an exciting adventure.

It is now three years since Justin Welby first published his Reimagining Britain. The fundamental message of that book remains as urgent as ever. But in this revised and expanded edition, Welby has taken fully into account the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Brexit and all the social and political unrest that has ensued. If anything, the new edition of Archbishop Welby's book is even more important than its predecessor. Here is a radical vision for 21st century Britain.

The thesis of this book is that the work of reimagining is as great as it was in 1945, and will happen either by accident - and thus badly - or deliberately. Welby explores the areas in which values are translated into action, including the traditional three of recent history: health (especially public, and mental), housing and education. To these he adds family; the environment; economics and finance; peacebuilding and overseas development; immigration; and integration. He looks particularly at the role of faith groups in enabling, and contributing to, a fairer future.

When so many are immobilized by political turmoil, this book builds on our past to offer hope for the future, and practical ways of achieving a more equitable society.

We are relational beings made in the image of a relational God. In our fast-changing and increasingly pressured world, we can easily lose sight of who we are and what we were created for. Yet grasping our core relational identity as children of God and maturing into deeper relationship with Him - and one another - are fundamental to our discipleship and well-being. I AM Relational is a rich blend of biblical teaching, personal insights and heartfelt testimonies that invite us into a journey of discovery and encounter. Tried and tested, its vibrant message will see new and seasoned believers alike maturing into life-changing experiences of the love of God and the relational likeness of Jesus. You have an eternal place of belonging and an eternal relational purpose - are you ready to experience them?

This compelling, inspiring book is an invigorating rereading of the fourth gospel by a well-known spirituality writer who has lived some years in the Holy Land. Uniquely, it approaches John’s gospel by exploring how he uses the senses, both physical and spiritual, in his encounter with Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh. This refreshing appreciation of the gospel will activate and stimulate our own discoveries and spiritual quest, not only of the gospel, but also of God’s world, ourselves and our mission.

To read and engage with the Bible, we first need to understand the story, the styles of writing and the approaches we find in the text. Michael Parsons encourages readers to look at the whole biblical storyline before demonstrating ways of approaching individual texts. Topics along the way include understanding different genres, the importance of narrative, imaginative reading, praying the Bible, difficult passages and what to do with them, and how to apply scripture to our own lives.

  • Feeling hopeless in the face of the world?
  • This book helps you look past present cultural woes to God's kingdom ahead
  • A powerful reminder that God outlasts all fear

How can we live a little more hopefully each day?
Fear, terrorism, corruption, fake news… it can be easy to become discouraged by the culture around us. Now more than ever, society needs hope in order to survive and flourish.
This book takes us beyond comfort zones and easy answers, and towards a deeper understanding and practice of hope. It offers reflections, stories and practical ways for individuals and groups to find hope in their lives through discovering more about God in their midst. Focusing on God's intervention in biblical history, God's presence in contemporary contexts and God's promised hope for the future, Joanne Cox-Darling encourages us to live more confidently, noticing more of the Spirit in our daily lives, and with more compassion and – ultimately – hope in God.

We are living through a period of cultural climate change. We have outsourced morality to the markets on the one hand, and the state on the other. The markets have brought wealth to many, and the state has done much to contain the worst excesses of inequality, but neither is capable of bearing the moral weight of showing us how to live.
This has had a profound impact on society and the way in which we interact with each other. Traditional values no longer hold, yet recent political swings show that modern ideals of tolerance have left many feeling rudderless and adrift. In this environment we see things fall apart in unexpected ways - toxic public discourse makes true societal progress almost unattainable, a more divisive society is fuelled by identity politics and extremism, and the rise of a victimhood mentality calls for 'safe spaces' but stifles debate. The influence of social media seems all-pervading and the breakdown of the family is only one result of the loss of social capital. Many fear what the future may hold.
Delivering a devastatingly insightful critique of our modern condition, and assessing its roots and causes from the ancient Greeks through the Reformation and Enlightenment to the present day, Sacks argues that there is no liberty without morality, and no freedom without responsibility.
