St. John The Baptist Church, Levisham, is a nineteenth century chuch, built as an alternative to the ancient valley church of St. Mary the Virgin, which is now a ruin.  It houses what is known as 'dragon stone'; portions of a carved gravestone depicting a dragon, thought to be pre-Norman Conquest, and the ancient font, which was originally housed in St. Mary's is also thought to be Norman or earlier.  It has carvings by Robert Thompson of Kilburn which bear his famous mouse trademark.

The Valley Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Levisham is now a ruin, set in a peaceful and tranquil valley between Lockton and Levisham.  The first church on the site was built in the early Norman period, although various pieces of carved stone date from Saxon times.  An annual service is held outside in the grounds of the ruins, and the church is a popular attraction to visitors and walkers.
